Presentation (Michael Bierut)

In my group, our topic is focusing on Michael Bierut: MIT Media Lab Logo Design Process. Our aims is to focus on how the designs were inspired by different areas such as designers and their works, buildings/ architecture an the MIT Media Lab. We found that the design was mainly inspired by the 7 x 7 grid from the 25th anniversary logo design and the 1960s MIT press logo which designed by Muriel Cooper who was an eminent twentieth century graphic designer.  In my opinion, I think the task is really inspiring me as I could see many inspirations that inspired different designers. I really like the book that Michael Bierut published ( the middle one in the right).

In this book, it showed a lot of designs that designed by Michael Bierut. Hence, I can look at his designs and inspire me which is really good to my study. I really like his quote- Use graphic designs to sell things, explain things, make things look better, make people laugh, make people cry, and(even once in a while) change the world. I think he covered the purpose of graphic design just in a sentence. I think this sentence is really inspiring me, I will keep remember it and think about it when I am designing.

Time

In this task, the aim is to manage our time well. In this session, we learned how to make a good time planning. Due to the fact that we have a lot of stress, planning time can help to tackle the problem. We were asked to create a time plan on a A1 sheet which listed what we will do in a week from 7:00 am until 12:am everyday.
Actually, I wake up at 8:00 am everyday if I have morning class(From 9:30 am), I think it is the best time to wake up as I have enough time to prepare to back to uni so that I won't be late. In my time table, from Monday to Thursday after class, I mainly still continue with my tasks. I really like to go to city and have a walk on Friday after school because it is really a good time for me to relax or destress. I think I am the only one have this activity to do "Study English". As I am the only Asian student in the class, my English must not good as others because it isn't my first language. Therefore, I may have some difficulties in the class, if I don't study English better, I won't be able to study well.

After a week
Actually, I didn't follow all schedules in the time table because I just focus to complete my first module( OUDG403 ) as the submission date is next week. Therefore, I didn't study English in this week. Hopefully, I will keep follow the schedules everyday in the future.

Strees

In this task, we were asked to answer 4 questions at the beginning which about stress. After that, we have to share it to the class and choose some from the others which relevant to your stress.

  1)What scares you?
  • Trying to keep on top of everything
  • My works not being good enough
  • Peoples work will be better than mine
  2)What stress you out?
  • Having a deadline
  • Blogging
  • Not being able to sit down and get any works done
  3)How do you destress?
  • Sleep
  • Watch a film/TV
  • Listen to music
4)What is your negative thought today?
  • Too tired to work
  • Woke up too late
After we picked some from others, we were asked to create a haiku.
  What I created is:
Having a deadline for the project,
peoples works are better than mine,
  watch a TV drama.

After finished this, we separated to different groups and  think of a way that can be graphic designed and be able to help people to tackle their stress. In my group, we thought to design a poster at the beginning. However, we thought this idea couldn't run for a long time. So we just designed to make something with the idea of adventure which inspired by the app "Pokemon Go". We designed the app that users going on adventures to discover nature and help open people's mind to happier things. As a result, they can meet more people or see more things in outside. Of course, if people "do more adventures", they can get the gift easily such as vouchers for cinemas, restaurants and amusement parks so that it can encourage people to use the app.

Personal Qualities

  1. From Hong Kong
  2. Smart
  3. Friendly
  4. Smiley
  5. Super nice
  6. Approachable
  7. Hard working
  8. Likes K-pop
  9. Cultured
  10. Cool shoes
  11.  Cool earrings
In this task, we were asked to list some personal qualities for each other(people that we didn't know). It was really a funny task as we could met people that we didn't know before and how is our first impression from the others. Due to the reason that I am the only Asian student in the class so all classmates already known I am from Hong Kong. I am really happy that they said I am super nice and friendly, etc. To be honest, when I came to the class in the first day, I felt very scary because there is no more Asian students other than me so I felt really nervous. Therefore, I believe if I be nice to others, I can make many friends. Most people said I like Kpop very much. Yes, it is true, I listen and watch kpop almost everyday. Due to this reason, I started to learn Korean. However, I didn't know why my classmates said I am hardworking as I think I am quite lazy sometimes. But I am really happy to hear that.

First experience of letterpress

26/10/2016
First experience of letterpress

I did my first letterpress experience today, I wanted to practice the skill of letterpress and wanted to see what will I produce. It was really interesting during the letterpress even though it made our hands very dirty, the outcome looks very good.

As this was my first time to do letterpress so I felt quite challenging at the beginning. I forgot some steps during my experience so I asked the staff to help me. He was very kind to help me and explained the reason why to do that step to me. Therefore, I learnt some interesting things in that day.

In this step, I think it was the most difficult part because I didn't know why the letters kept flow down, when I asked the staff about that, he said I couldn't press with too much force. So I just did it again and again until the letters didn't flow down. It took me about 30 mins to do that.

As this was my first time to do the letterpress so I made a mistake in my first output, I rotated the order which mean I made the sentence like "Labihs yas tnod". So I just did it again.
Overall, it was really a good experience for me because if I didn't have a real experience about letterpress, I won't be able to know how to do letterpress and I learned a lot of things from it so that I can sure I won't make the same mistake in next time.
